Estate Records of BROOKS in Person Co., NC

Person County, North Carolina Estate Files – Brooks surname

The estate records of Person County, North Carolina are housed at the NC State Archives.  The largest series of interest are called the “Loose papers of Estate Records.”  This series of fibredex boxes contains most, if not all, documents relating to the estate of a particular individual.  They may contain administrator bonds, guardian accounts, estate inventories and sales accounts.

The estate records housed at the Archives are organized in boxed series first by county, then alphabetically by surname.  In 1978, Katherine Kerr Kendall published a book, Person County North Carolina Compilations: Land Grants; 1794, 1805, 1823 Tax Lists; Record Books Abstracts, 1792-1820; Powers of Attorney. In this book, she included a list of all the estate records in the Person County Estate Records series.

The list below was copied from KKK’s book Person County Compilations.  She made this list back in 1978 when the original documents of North Carolina were stored at the NC Department of Archives and History.  In her book, she noted that these Person County estate records and documents were alphabetically arranged in file folders. At the time this list was compiled, the call number for the estate records was 078.508.1-44, indicating 078 is the county code for Person County and that there were only 44 file boxes in the estate records series.  Since the publishing of this book, these files have been moved to the NC State Archives.  According to the updated NC State Archives finding guide, there are 78 file boxes for Person County estate records, therefore these estate records must have been filed into new boxes when they were moved.

My surname of interest in Person County, North Carolina is BROOKS.  Below I have copied Kendall’s entries for the BROOKS surname.  On my next trip to the archives I will validate that this list is complete for the BROOKS surname. I have left spaces for notes.

Kendall’s book on Person County Compilations can be searched online at ancestry.com. A subscription is required to view the records.

  1. Ginger,
I am desperately hunting the parents of Henry Brooks, b. 1789, N. C. He never used a middle initial in any of the records I have found for him. He had moved to Maury county, Tennessee by 1818 where he married Catherine Y. Owen, b. 1793, Granville county, N. C. They lived in Tennessee but moved to Kentucky by 1850. Henry and Catherine Brooks both died in Kentucky in 1862. I have her parents but have never been able to get a grasp on his parents. If you ever happen to run across any info on him, please let me know. I live in Texas and don’t get the opportunity to go to N. C. to search records. Thanks in advance for any info you can send my way. You have a great website!!!!

  2. HI Nancy,

I don’t know how many Henry Brooks there were living in the whole state of North Carolina at the time, but your guy seems to fit in with the Henry Brooks son of Charles Brooks and Sally Williams of Caswell County. IN 1816, Sally Brooks wrote up a deed in which she gave all of her property to her 15 children and named them by name. Her husband, Charles, had just died in January of 1816.

This Henry had two brothers, Blacknell and George Brooks. Did you find them in either TN or KY along with Henry? I do not know what happened to this family. But if you find other Brooks family members in either of these two locations that might help you trace the family back to a family in NC.

  3. Ginger,
Thanks for your reply. I do not think he is the son of Charles and Sally Brooks. Henry has no children named Charles, Sally, Blacknell, or George.
In 1820, Williamsport, Maury, Tennessee, there were four Brooks families:
    Henrey(Henry), 26-45
    James, 16-25
    Joseph, 16-25
    Thomas, 26-45.
I don’t know if they are brothers but would assume some connection as they are living in the same area.
    Henry’s known children are:
    William Henry Brooks, b. 1819-d. aft. 1870
Mary L. Brooks Howard, b. 1821-d. aft 1880 (Texas) (my ancestor)
Elizabeth Jane Brooks Bozarth, b. 1822-d. 1861, Kentucky
    Thomas Latney Brooks, b. 1824-d. 1902, Kentucky
John Franklin Brooks, b.1825-d. 1905, Arkansas
Isabella Allen Brooks Owen, b. 1830-d.1906, Oregon
    Felix Owen Brooks, b. 1832-d. 1876, Kentucky
    Addison Jasper Brooks, b. 1833- d.1892, Kentucky
    James L. Brooks, b. 1838-d.?
Eliza Catherine Brooks Hoover, b. 1841-d. 1915, Kentucky

  4. Thanks for your suggestions, Ginger. I am beginning to think that he came out of the William, Jr. line that was in Gates county, NC. I just can’t find a will on either of the William Brooks in that county. I mainly wanted my info on your website in case any else is researching the same family. Keep me in mind of you ever run across a Henry Brooks.
    Thanks again,
    Nancy
